At birth, the human body has about 270 bones. Bones fuse together as the body grows and develops. By adulthood, the skeleton contains 206 bones.

The adult skeleton is made up of:

  • 28 skull bones (8 cranial, 14 facial, and 6 ear bones)
  • 1 hyoid (a horseshoe-shaped bone in the neck)
  • 26 vertebrae (7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, the sacrum, and the coccyx) that form the spine
  • 24 ribs (12 on each side) and the sternum, which comprise the chest
  • 30 bones in each of the upper and lower limbs, for a total of 120
  • 2 clavicles and 2 scapulae that connect the upper limbs to the torso
  • 2 pelvic bones on either side of the sacrum that connect the lower limbs to the torso
